Innovate is an ideas contest run by BCC. Entrepreneurs, part-time inventors and everyday big dreamers enter their idea online with the hope of being selected for BCC’s Market Validation Program. At the end of the process the best idea wins $10,000 to help turn it into a reality.. After four years establishing the contest’s reputation, its branding was (naturally) starting to tire. So BCC recruited us to come up with a new idea. Funny that. Our researched showed several visual themes saturated the ‘innovation’ market: lightbulbs, cogs and multiple colours. Images indicated upward motion, forward progress and the addition of a missing link. However no one in the space was amplifying something that all entrepreneurs and successful business people have encountered time and time again: screwing up. Screwing up (or failing) is at the heart of innovation. You dream; you try; you screw up; you adapt; you repeat; and eventually you win. So the visual core of the new branding became five, multi-coloured, screwed up paper balls. Aside from the fun it allows us to have with Innovate’s marketing collateral, the balls represent: - The innovation process - The ability to breathe new life into forgotten or discarded ideas - The number of Innovate contest winners to date If nothing else, the rebranding of Innovate proves that screwing up really does lead to success.
